Field of Invention:
In Orthopaedics, there are normal anatomical variations in shape and size, angles & versions. In vitro while doing an operative procedure which involves the angle calculation, ‘The Surgeons’ are guided by his mental concepts of bony orientation and few bony landmarks.
I have designed this Jig Device which can be placed on and across any bone in the body to assess angle formed between two sharp metal wires used commonly in any orthopaedic procedure called K wires. The jig helps us to pass k wires in desired angle and to confirm under X-ray control before proceeding to next step. The Jig also allows to ‘Re-Draw’ the angle if not satisfactory by reinserting the wires at different positions till it is acceptable.
Usefulness of the Jig:
- To assess normal anatomical angle and version for that particular patient. This is particularly required at upper ends for the Head Neck versions of Humerus and Femur. One needs to reproduce these angles while inserting Joint replacement Prosthesis.
- In patients with improper union after fracture which is called Malunion, the orthopaedic surgeon will need to correct the malalignment to more normal shaped bone by doing an Osteotomy i.e. taking the Wedge of bone piece out to reorient the bone.
- In paediatric and adult cases of a peculiar disease which causes loss of blood supply to bone with effects called Avasular Necrosis, the surgeons need to reorient the bone at femoral head to relieve the pain. This jig will help in actual calculation and execution of the angle wedge with surgical precision.
The advantages of the Jig are:
- Ease of angle calculation.
- Redoing and repeating the process without any damage to bone.
- Execution to the precision.
- To draw the angles and wedges of the bone in any plane of Body.
- Easy maintenance.
- To be able to make it ‘sterile’ to be used in any patient for surgery.
