Department of Neonatology

About Us

UG · PG · Fellowships

Bharati hospital and research centre’s neonatal intensive care unit(NICU) is dedicated to the needs of the vulnerable and sick newborns. The aim of our unit is to provide evidence based, worldwide accepted neonatal management by the trained neonatologist at affordable cost for middle and lower socio economic class families. Our core values are hard work, dedication, team workwork, innovations and commitment to patient care.

Our unit is 60 bedded, spread over 10,000 square feet, on the second floor of the hospital. This is a level 3B accredited NICU(one of the very few in the country). The various services provided under one roof are advanced ventilation- high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy

conventional ventilation ,volume guarantee ,non invasive ventilation(bubble CPAP system & HFNC), surfactant administration (LISA/INSURE), in house point of care sonography & functional echocardiography, total parenteral nutrition, in-house ABG,EEG, transcutaneous bilirubin meter, in house hearing screening, 24 hour on call paediatric surgery team, ROP screening & laser, therapy for ROP, newborn screening, high risk developmental follow up unit, neonatal retrieval services, human milk banking. The nurse patient ratios are maintained as per the standard guidelines. The unit is managed by 5 faculties, 13 neonatal fellows, 6 pediatrics residents and supported by medical social worker, neonatal physiotherapist, speech therapist and lactation counsellor.

The unit admits 1500 neonates annually, with survival rates of more than 95%.Monthly 60 neonates are supported for respiration with 97% ventilator survival rates. Babies weighing less than 1000grams are admitted in unit(almost 40 per year) with survival rates of 93% and almost 90 babies per year admission of babies between 1000 grams to 1500grams, with 95% survival rates. Almost 2-3 neonates per month are admitted for surgery in the unit. Majority of the neonates have problems with the gut, few with windpipe and lungs anomaly and some having hernias. Other babies cared in the unit are those requiring breathing support at birth, infections, kidney problems, seizures, feeding difficulties, neurological issues.

The neonatal transport team retrieves on an average 20 babies per month from various hospitals in and around Pune. Almost one third of babies admitted are born outside and referred to our unit for higher level of intensive care.

The duration of stay in the hospital varies from 1-2days to almost 2-3 months(in cases of very preterm babies). The babies are roomed in with mother once they are off respiratory support, tolerating feeds enterally and have matured to 32 weeks with a weight of atleast 1.3 kilograms.

Vision
  • Every newborn, every resource, every chance at life—delivering world-class tertiary neonatal care powered by hope and health equity.
Mission
Our mission is to bridge the gap in healthcare equity by delivering comprehensive, advanced neonatal intensive care to high-risk newborns. Department of Pharmacology

Welcome to the Department of Neonatology. The birth of a child is a time of immense joy, but when a newborn requires specialized intensive care, it can also bring profound vulnerability and uncertainty for families. In our Tertiary Care Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), our core purpose is to stand alongside parents during these crucial moments, offering both cutting-edge medical care and heartfelt human support.

As a tertiary center situated within a charitable hospital, our core commitment is rooted in healthcare equity. We firmly believe that state-of-the-art medical technology, clinical expertise, and advanced neuroprotective care should be accessible to every infant, regardless of their family’s financial or social background. No newborn under our care is ever turned away or compromised due to an inability to pay.

Our unit is equipped with advanced life-support technologies and staffed 24/7 by a dedicated team of neonatologists, specialized nurses, and pediatric subspecialists. Beyond survival, our goal is to ensure the best possible long-term quality of life for our young graduates through evidence-based practices, strict safety protocols, and meticulous post-discharge developmental follow-up.

We view parents not as visitors, but as vital partners in their baby's healing journey. Through family-centered care, transparent communication, and continuous emotional support, we strive to make the NICU experience as comforting as possible.

Thank you for visiting our page. Whether you are a parent seeking care, a healthcare professional looking to collaborate, or a well-wisher supporting our mission, we welcome you to our community dedicated to giving every newborn a healthy start in life.

Warm regards,

Dr. Nandini Malshe

Best Practices

Human milk bank services
  • Established in March 2022 in collaboration with MMF and finolex ltd.
  • Objectives of the Practice:Helping the vulnerable sick neonates with the availability of pasteurized donor human milk for feeding.
Human milk banking involves educating mothers for donation of their excess milk followed by pasterization of the milk for reducing the chances of infection and thereafter it is tested microbiologically for any infection, before dispensing to needy neonates. Over these years more than 1500 families have benefitted from this
